"Takumi, a Japanese high school student spends his days lethargically around school, dreaming of his cute long-time friend and classmate Natsuki, working at a local gas station with his friend Itsuki, and delivering tofu for his father's business every night in a dinky little white Ae86 Toyota Trueno. Meanwhile, two amateur mountain racing experts, Ryosuke Takahasi and Takeshi Nakazato, friends and rivals, decide to go around Japan racing others in different prefectures and keeping track of their victories. They are checking out Akina Mountain in the Gunma area and visit the local gas station to challenge the "racing god" of the area that they keep hearing about. However, Itsuki, a bumbling and ambitiously loudmouth fool is the one who has been spreading these rumors about himself and takes up their challenge to race. The expected occurs and Itsuki makes a fool out of himself, but later that night, when N akazato is on the hill by himself, a drifting AE86 on its way back from tofu delivery easily beats him. No one seems to know who the driver is when Nakazato returns to the gas staiton the next day for a rematch, and Takumi stays quiet, uninterested in the sport. However, circumstances eventually call for Takumi to show up for the race, shocking everyone and even himself as he begins to develop an interest and competitive side."
